Cooling Down Your Turbo
I attended the event organized by Ignition.my together with Option Malaysia Magazine for Rookies Time Attack. It was a burning hot sunny afternoon. I was simply dehydrated but the tyres burning smell keeps me awake. I often passes by many participant's cars.
Trying to scam my way in to places which has blowing FAN. And I heard someone saying " why need to chill down the turbo, let it finish the whole 16 laps lahhh". I was laughing like crazy, thinking in my heart
" Hmm..Fried Turbo..I wanna see it "
So, telling everyone and reminding myself, does a Turbo Needs a Cooling Time Period?
Yes, a Turbo requires a cooling down time. How long a time really depends on how hard the car was driven prior to wanting to turn it off.A turbo requires the oil to circulate through it, in order to keep it cool and lubricated * Dont think wrongly*.
When you turn your engine off, the Turbo will continue to spin and the oil will stop the supplied to the turbo unless the engine is running. This can cause the turbo to heat up and for residual oil that still on the turbine blades to kick on to them. Over time, unless you allow a cool down period, you will notice a substantial difference in the performance of your turbo.
Most car companies will not even mention this to you when buying a car with a turbo for example : Subaru WRX,Mitshubishi Lancer EVO, and if they do, they will generally recommend a cool down period of 10- 20 seconds. I would suggest 40 seconds after regular driving, and 1 - 2 minutes after hard driving.
If you are competing in the race, that is a whole lot of different story. Drivers with automotive knowledge will uses the fastest way to cool down. Racing/Competing on track makes you no time to cool down your turbo like taking your own sweet time.
