Defense of the Defenders

Land Rover is a British brand who specializes in four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles and is the second oldest 4WD brand in the world. It is a company that has been in production of 4WD vehicles for well over 30 years and counting. One of its popular makes is the Defender which began as the Land Rover 90 and the Land Rover 110. Two variants with the badge reflecting the length of the wheelbase, the Land Rover 110 with 110-inch wheelbase length and the Land Rover 90 at 93-inches. The production of the Defender began all the way back in 1983 and had a 2.5 litre fitted and over time the engine was upgraded to what it is today.

This Defender is the 110 variant and is not like ordinary Defenders out there. It is specially outfitted with body parts all from Kahn Design. Headquartered in Bradford, England, Kahn Design is a specialized automotive design house and Afzal Kahn has envisaged that each Kahn Design product would be a timeless classic, reflecting European lifestyle, individuality and quality.

Parts may be from Kahn Design, but the outfitting of the parts and out local Kahn Design authorized dealer is Perfect Temptation Autoparts who is located in Kelantan. PTA specializes in rebuilding, customization and autoparts sales.
True to Kahn Design’s vison, after fitting the Defender 110 with the Kahn Design Defender wide track arch kit, it looks marvelous. Classical and individuality is definitely reflected and for fans of 4WD out there, it is really something to look at.

Tanking under the hood is a 4.6 litre V8 with the custom exhaust, both creates the low growl of a lion defending its territory. The automatic transmission along with the front and rear axle are from the 3.9 litre Range Rover. Sporting Defender 1983 18” matte black also from Kahn Design and BF Goodrich 285/65/18 tyres, it completes the outlook of this unique ride.
On the interior, seats are all SSCUS Euro Sport and the flooring has been changed to wood. Putting it together is definitely not an easy feat. Looking at it will bring a drool to many 4WD fans.

Best part is this is only half the story. Another design, made to fit the Defenders of old is Twisted. To founder Charles Fawcett, first started partnering his father, to offer professional 4x4 off-road driver training and at the same time began developing a small range of tuning and performance upgrades for the then range of Land Rover 200 and 300tdi models. By 2008, demand for the modifications and expert advice grew and Twisted became official. From 2009 the business focused purely on Defender transformations.
We were lucky to get to see one of the rare Twisted Defenders here in Malaysia.

Rebuilt by Black Hawk Land Rover in Subang, the whole bodykit is from Twisted. Acquired by Perfect Temptations Autoparts, it signifies the exclusivity of the Defender and on the interior retains its retro look. The daylights and 18” rims are also from twisted to give it a modern touch, even the CPU set is from Twisted.

The interior is of course customized to keep all the classic look of the original with an elegant twist. Brake kits are upgraded to Alcon 6 pot with 355mm discs to show off the rims and BF Goodrich tyres.

Wonderfully customized and just seeing sends a shiver to the spine. Classic yet modern, put together in perfect harmony to make sweet love.
